Sustainable development blog : ecology and humanitarian aid

Okay we all know the facts; 70% of the Earth is covered by water; 97% of that is saltwater and freshwater makes up less than 1%. It’s vital to ecosystems; rivers and lakes provide habitat for fish and other aquatic species; wetlands help filter pollutants and nutrients and mitigate flooding.

Water can also influence climate; large lakes canhelp moderate the climate of a specific region; clouds, ice and snow all reflect energy from the sun back into space, which again affects climate. Which are all good reasons for Blog Action Day on October 15^th to be focusing on the theme of water. Blog Action Day is an “annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking a global discussion and driving collective action.”

"It is important to monitor water resources because climate change is having numerous water-related impacts. Precipitation patterns and surface water flows are being altered. Extreme weather events, including severe droughts and floods are becoming more frequent: glaciers are melting more quickly and sea levels are rising.”¹ In 2009 over 10,000 blog and websites from more than 150 countries became involved in Blog Action Day.
